This is a project to revitalize an old private house in Kita-Senju, Adachi-ku, Tokyo. The current owner’s desire to preserve the townscape led to the renovation of an old private house, the “Former Itagaki Residence,” built in 1938, into a new cluster of three types of restaurants. The project began in the summer of 2019 before the confusion caused by the new coronavirus began. It was triggered by a rumor that the former Itagaki Residence might be transformed into an apartment building.

Inside what was formerly a mechanical workshop, a large open kitchen was set up for making pizzas and breads. A ribbon wall delimits the space, acting as a curtain, lowering the scale of the large concrete box and at the same time, hiding service spaces: kitchen, refrigerated chamber, flour warehouse, bathrooms. All kitchen devices organize the space as islands, as silver and stainless elements. In this way, the entire manufacturing process is visible and can be explored and felt as a single space.

DAWN to DUSK Restaurant / TOUCH Architect

DAWN to DUSK, as the name implies, is meticulously crafted to provide customers with comprehensive services from morning until night. The establishment comprises a restaurant, cafe, bar, and a glass house for events, accompanied by a generously spacious outdoor area. The concept of ‘Dawn to Dusk’ is vividly expressed in both its exterior and interior design. ‘Dawn’ and ‘Dusk’ can be portrayed through the image of the Sun when it appears and disappears. On the exterior, part of the circle, representing the sun, is carved out of the brick wall, symbolizing sunrise and sunset. This incomplete circle also applies to different zones in the form of an arch.

The Oreum Restaurant / Dajoo Architect

Near Seooreung in Goyang City, a small walking path exists. This walking path is frequented by those who have finished a simple meal after visiting the royal tombs. The owner of the building, situated at the starting point of the gentle walking path that people take after their meal to ascend lightly, wanted to refer to this large structure as “Oreum.” Many people seek solace in nature when they wish to escape from the stark city and the weariness of daily life. Perhaps it’s because nature constantly evolves, offering us new experiences and diverse emotions, instilling in us both reverence and comfort. Cafe Oreum has encapsulated the desires of its clients and unraveled the brand’s story, aiming not just to be a café but also a cultural space where various experiences that one can feel in nature are available. The word “Oreum” encompasses the sense of ascending a small mountain, experiencing sensory experiences, emotions, and the changing scenery.

Spotzza Pizza / Nó Arquitetura

March 16, 2024 Andreas Luco 0

The project in question is a complete renovation of a property from the 60s, to adapt it to the use of a pizzeria. The project sought, through materiality, to create a relationship between the decade in which the house was built and contemporary times. Little shards of flooring, glass brick, slate and small coverings interact with microperforated sheets, coin sheets, metal surfaces and translucent coverings, creating a provocative, timeless and absolutely curious atmosphere.
